Once you get started on our Snow Science Kit, you won’t believe your eyes. Just add water to the Insta-Snow® powder included in this fake snow kit, and in seconds, the water turns into a fluffy substance that looks just like piles of deep snow.

And the best part? Insta-Snow is reusable! Once the water evaporates, leaving the powder dry, you can add more water to fluff it up again and again. (We suggest that you DO NOT seal the snow in an air-tight container. You will want the water in the snow to evaporate.) That’s just one of the 6 great experiments included in our Snow Science Kit.

Fake Snow Kit: How does it work?

Insta-Snow® powder is in a classification of chemicals called superabsorbent polymers, which are long chains of molecules that absorb liquids quickly. Think of the molecules that make up the white powder as millions of microscopic, water-thirsty sponges. As soon as the two substances mix, the water quickly moves from the outside of the polymer to the inside and causes the polymer to swell rapidly. When you run your fingers through the snow, you notice it’s cool to the touch. Why? The water in the polymer is evaporating, and this evaporation makes it feel cool. That’s how this fake snow kit explores and teaches scientific understanding, and it’s a key component of your child’s educational exploration into this STEM science kit.
