Shape Gel™ Starter Set
How Does It work?
Shape Gel is made through a chemical reaction that creates a new, solid substance from two liquids. The scientific name for the gooey Shape Gel is sodium alginate and it’s full of very long molecules called polymers. The activator solution contains calcium, which links one long polymer chain to another. The instant these two liquids meet, the cross-linking process begins.
As a result, the molecules create longer chains of molecules and form an outer layer where first contact is made. This hardening process changes the Shape Gel as it floats out of the mold and the cross-linking process pulls from the outside in, giving it a puffy appearance. As the cross-linking process continues, it causes the gel to morph as it pulls in toward its midpoint.
Inspire the Next Generation
At Steve Spangler Science, STEM is not just an acronym or a checklist of required subjects. Our STEM kits encourage young scientists to seek new and exciting experiences that foster the skills of collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity.
Create Shapes With Chemistry
What other toys or crafty items could you mix with Shape Gel goo to create new and different creations?
Create a Puffy Starfish
Have some fun making a beachful of colorful, puffy starfish and show your artistic ability too! Over time,Shape Gel will dry out (dehydrate) and shrink. But, a very cool thing happens to Shape Gel stars as they dry.

Stimulate Artistic Talent and Learn Science Too
Children can show off their artistic talent and learn about polymer science at the same time with the Shape Gel™ Starter Set from Steve Spangler Science. This set comes with a star-shaped mold so kids can mix up the colorful goo and squirt them into the mold any way they like. When they put the goo-filled molds in the activator solution, the magic of cross-linking begins and the stars solidify to become solid objects. The set includes instruction cards for three different experiments that give young scientists a chance to work with polymers and see how versatile these amazing compounds can be. They may even want to try it with your cookie cutters to see what other shapes they can create — you might even want to try it, too.
