Product Description
Behold the hottest paper this side of the sun. No, seriously‚ hold a piece of this magical heat-sensitive paper in your hand and watch as the area you touch changes from blue or magenta to white! It isn’t sorcery – that image is frozen there through thermochromic science. Heat sensitive paper is the mind-boggling result of a process that coats one side of a piece of regular old paper with special thermochromic ink. The thermochromic ink loses its color when it reaches a certain temperature, which results in the hypnotizing color-changing paper you see before you!
It’s amazing how easy it is to use heat-sensitive paper to teach young researchers. Our heat-sensitive paper pack comes with 100 temperature-sensitive sheets, so you can run this experiment in science class several times over. Pass out this thermochromic paper to your students, and watch children light up as they play with temperature differentials on these sheets of paper.
For a cool science experiment, ask your students to test different objects on the color-changing paper. Start with their hands and fingers and then move to other objects in the classroom. If a pencil was recently held, will it have an effect on the temperature-sensitive paper? That’s an experiment your students can investigate themselves!
What’s Included?
Blue Heat-Sensitive Paper
- 100pk of 8.5″x11″ heat-sensitive paper
How Does It Work?
Heat-sensitive paper changes color through a special thermochromic ink. When the ink reaches a certain temperature, it loses its color, which results in the color-changing effect your students will be fascinated by with our thermochromic paper. It’s not just paper that uses thermochromic ink, either! Ever drink out of a color-changing coffee mug? The ink contains a pigment that responds to temperature change. You can find similar inks in anything from toilet seats to coffee mugs. How cool!
Pair our heat-sensitive paper with an instruction about insulators, and you’re bound to have an exciting and engaged science class! Temperature-sensitive paper is a great way to run experiments and get children excited to learn. Make color-changing paper a science class staple this year!

Question
Robert Ferrante –
I can imagine using a color printer to make secret messages. If you print in the same color as the paper it will be ‘invisible’, and when heat is applied it should stand out against the white. Or, print in white, and then the printing will ‘disappear’ when it is hot. Are the paper colors (at each stage) sufficiently uniform for this to work?

Hi Robert. I apologize we have not tried this before. Heat-sensitive paper changes color through a special thermochromic ink. When the ink reaches a certain temperature, it loses its color, which results in the color-changing effect your students will be fascinated by with our thermochromic paper.

Traci –
Does the paper change color in the sun, like liquid crystal? Or do you have to directly touch it?

It changes color when something warm touches the paper. It is not reactive to light.

Jeff – thanks for the e-mail. The paper will change color when touched with human heat. Once it cools it will go back to the original color. Have a great rest of the year. Joshua

Question
sarah –
Hi !
I was just wondering, does the paper change color when you just hold it with your hands
or does it need more pressure?
Thanks

Staff Lisa – Customer Service Manager –
It will change color whenever heat is applied. If your hands are not warm enough to make the paper change, rapidly rub them together to heat them up.

Question
sarah –
Hello,
I know this has been asked but what is the gsm/ weigh of this paper?
Also, is it possible to print on both sides?
Thank you!
Best,
Sarah

Staff Lisa – Customer Service Manager –
Sorry for the delay. The paper is 60# text and 90.3 gsm. The color-changing dye is only on one side of the paper. We are not able to produce it with dye on both sides.

Question
Shawn –
Can I write a secret message on this

Staff Lisa – Customer Service Manager –
To be fair, we have not tried it. I bet you could use some kind of waxy material to keep the heat from touching the paper to do some secret messages. Experiment with it and let us know what works best for you. We’d love to share your findings.

2. if there are 11×17”(tabloid) size of the paper?
Thanks

The Heat Sensitive Paper is only reactive to heat. It will change colors if it happens to be warm enough outside. Unfortunately, we do not sell the paper in a larger size.

Question
Brittany Hatch –
Would I be able to laminate this paper and still have it change colors when I touch it?

Staff Lisa – Customer Service Manager –
You can laminate the paper, but since the heat will take longer to reach the paper, you will need to apply more heat or allow more time for the paper to change color.

Question
Suzanne King –
How long does this heat sensitive paper last? Meaning does it wear off after an x amount of use?
(0) (0) Watch Unwatch
Staff lisabrooks –
The paper will continue to work for years, provided it is not stored in any direct sunlight. The “effect” will wear off within a few seconds once it is removed from the heat source. Once the heat source is reapplied, it will change color again.

Question
serag –
Can i write anything on it and when i heat it turn to the things i wrote ?! And cod it be black papers could it be made as abook ?! 🙂

Staff lisabrooks –
You can write on the paper. You can even run it through a printer or copier to create your message. The paper will change color (pink to white or blue to white) when a heat source is applied. The heat source could be a warm cup of coffee/tea, your hands (if they are warm), sitting in a warm window, etc. Once the heat source is removed, the paper will change back to its original color (white to pink or white to blue). Just so you are aware, the paper is only colored on one side. You can use it in a book. Have fun getting as creative as you want with the paper!

Mira –
Hello,
Does the color change last or is it just temporary?
Is the paper non-toxic? Can it be used by kids under 3?
Thank you!

Staff lisabrooks –
As long as it is on a heat source, the color of the paper will change. Once it is removed from the heat source, the paper will turn back to the original color. The paper is non-toxic and is safe to use with young children.
